The Barnes County Wildlife Club met for their monthly meeting April 14th at the Valley City Eagles Club. The first order of business was to honor five Valley City State University students awarded scholarships at they enter into the VCSU Fisheries and Wildlife Program.

There are many athletic teams in the Valley City Public School system that contain dozens of talented, passionate, and motivated students and coaches. One of these teams just started their 2021 season, after being dormant for many months.

The past week has been my busiest in the outdoors, as it has been for the last eight years.  There’s been more to get done than loading up for pheasant opener at the farm.  The checklist is far longer than the one leading up to the start of firearms deer season. 

The state Game and Fish Department’s annual spring aerial mule deer survey is set to begin April 1 in western North Dakota. Weather permitting, the survey takes about two weeks to complete.

The Express Wrestling Club had 19 wrestlers compete in the North Dakota State Folkstyle Tournament and had 7 girls compete in the Girls State Folkstyle Tournament held last weekend at the Bismarck Civic Center.  Express Wrestling put five wrestlers in the finals, coming away with one champion.

Wildlife, shooting, fraternal and nonprofit civic organizations are urged to submit an application for the Encouraging Tomorrow’s Hunters program, a North Dakota Game and Fish Department grant program developed to assist in the recruitment, retention and reactivation of hunters.

The Valley City State University baseball team has made several changes to its schedule this week due to weather and field conditions. A non-conference game scheduled for Tuesday at Dickinson State University has been canceled.

Valley City Park & Rec Youth Archery classes will be held from March 23rd through April 27th. The classes are for students ages 8-10, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., and ages 11 and up, from 7:30-8:30 p.m., at the Rec Center basement.

Hi-Liner Wrestling celebrated a great season with their annual banquet and award night. Coach Trevar Hansen says that 2020-21 was arguably the best season in Valley City High School’s wrestling history and that he is very proud of the team and the calibre at which they competed.

The Viper Squirt hockey team closed out their season with a 4-2 win over the Wahpeton Blades. The team had an awesome season that was highlighted by attending the Squirt International tournament in Fargo in mid-February.

Express Wrestling took to the mat with many wrestlers competing for their first or second time at the Jamestown Taz Tournament.  The coaches accompanying the team in Jamestown were Coach Sam Northup, Coach Tim Miller, and Coaches Koye and Koltyn Grebel—huge shout out to them.
