In the 1942 North Dakota State Class B Boys Basketball championship game, the Elbowoods Warriors and Lakota Raiders took the court to battle for the state title. In the end, Lakota was on top, 32-31, and though the winner seemed clear, the final buzzer was only the beginning of the battle.
Later, the North Dakota High School Association discovered that the Lakota team had used an ineligible player (over the age limit) in the game, even though Elbowoods followed the rules by benching one of their star players, John Rabbithead, who had turned 20 the day of the game and ineligible to compete.
