100 years ago on May 26th, 2020, one of the area’s most famous residents was born in Jamestown, ND.
Norma Egstrom arrived in the world in 1920 to parents Marvin and Selma, the youngest of seven children (eventually to be the seventh of eight). Her father worked as an agent for the Midland Continental Railroad, and Norma had little time with her mother—Selma died at the young age of 39, when Norma was only four.
It was upon that occasion that the young girl to become the famous “Peggy Lee” wrote her first song.
“I remember writing a lyric to the song ‘Melody of Love’ when my mother died,” Peggy later recalled. “I would walk around the house singing, ‘Mama’s gone to dreamland on the train.’”
