It’s a tough subject to talk about, having a lot to do with the fact that many people have personally been touched by suicide. But keeping quiet about it lets it grow and thrive.
North Dakota’s Suicide Prevention Plan (2017-2020) was put together by ND Suicide Prevention Coalition and ND Department of Health, with assistance/approval from Governor Doug Burgum and State Health Officer Mylynn Tufte.
It lays out just how much of a burden suicide has both in the US and here in ND.
Suicide death rates have increased nationally from 1999 to 2016, but the state of ND experienced the largest suicide rate increase during that time (up 58%).
A recently-released figure shows that ND’s suicide rate is 25% higher than the national average, with 154 suicides in the state during 2019.
