Mindy Morgenstern

An Investigation Discovery docu-series airing its third season in June 2020 is described this way: “Murder in the Heartland” tells both the story of a murder in a small town as well as how the lives of the people close to it were forever transformed in unexpected ways. The townspeople not only become our storytellers, but they also hold the clues to the puzzle that has forever changed their lives and how they understand their home.”

A TV crew was in Valley City filming an episode for the show last week, focusing on Mindy Morgenstern. She was a senior at Valley City State University when she was murdered in 2006.

On Thursday, executive producer Greg Klein sat down with Valley City media to talk about the upcoming episode.

“The conceit of the show is the murders happen in small towns throughout the heartland of America,” Klein says. “When we found out about the story, it seemed to be full of some interesting investigation as well as a victim who was incredibly sympathetic and a family who desperately wanted justice.”

For this particular series, Klein adds, there is a lot of thought as to what cases best fit the show’s focus.
