News highlights from Saturday, April 2 to Friday, April 8

*Barnes County Social Services is encouraging the community to observe National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April. Barnes County will honor this by holding a variety of public awareness events throughout the month.

*An indoor racing event in Valley City raised funds for area fire departments and provided a day of entertainment on Saturday at the North Dakota Winter Show Event Center. The Indoor Duel in the Dakotas INEX Legend Cars Nationals was sponsored by the Devils Lake Speedway. It featured racing from legend cars, lightening sprint cars, ATVs, slingshots and motorcycles on a 1/8th-mile dirt oval track.

*Valley City City Commissioners discussed a utility rate increase at Tuesday's finance meeting. The commission will discuss the matter again in May and plans to consider approving the increase to the electric, water and sewer rates.

*The Valley City Fire Department recently purchased a brand new pumper truck, and Valley City officials got the keys Wednesday afternoon.

*Barnes County Relay for Life's committee is holding a father/daughter dance for kindergartners through sixth-graders and their dads Friday, April 15 at the Hi-Line Activity Center. Amy Yokom, who heads Relay sponsorship, said the dance will be held from 7-9 p.m. and Paul Leier of Big Hammer Entertainment is supplying the music.

*The 22nd annual Valley City State University Scholarship Auction — with the theme “VCSU Viking Heroes Unite” — will be held Friday, April 15, at the Valley City Eagles Club.

*Eighth Avenue Southwest in Valley City will close Monday because of work being done to the Valley City Health, Wellness and Physical Education Center. Eighth Avenue Southwest will be closed to all through traffic, and a detour will be in place during that time. Once construction has concluded, the road will re-open in an estimated three to four weeks.
