Valley City Native Dies in House Fire

Valley City Native Sharon (Kvien) Cashatt died in a house fire in Rockford Ill. on Monday, Jan 7. Also killed in the fire was her son; Douglas Cashatt, 24; son Dominick Cashatt, 13; and her great-granddaughter Isabella Gonzalez, 10 months.

Sharon, 61, was a 1969 graduate of Valley City High School. She was born and raised in Valley City, by her parents Maurice and Dorothy Kvien, along with her brothers and sisters Ginny, Roger, Sharon, Mickey and Beth.

Sharon married after high school and settled in the Rockford area. Her first marriage ended in divorce. Later she remarried but lost her husband last year.

Through the years, the Cashatts took in dozens of foster children and ended up adopting eight of them. Three of those children died in the fire with their mother. Besides taking care of her own children, Sharon was a teacher’s aid at a Rockford school.

The blaze started in the living room, according to Sharon’s brother Mickey Kvien of Valley City, and may have started because of a Christmas tree. Two of Sharon’s children survived the blaze. The family also had four dogs, three of which were found alive in the basement.

Sharon is survived by her children, Patrick Cashatt; Tara Gonzalez; Diontae Cashatt; Tasha Cashatt; Jerry Cashatt; Michael Cashatt; Jason Cashatt; and Sean Cashatt; 12 grandchildren; mother, Dorothy Kvien; sisters, Ginny Munson and Beth Kvien; brothers, Mickey Kvein and Roger Kvein.
