Postage Increasing 1 Cent Jan. 27

The cost for First-Class mail will increase by 1 cent Jan. 27, when the price goes from 45 cents to 46 cents, Valley City Postmaster Sherry Johnson confirmed Wednesday.

Along with the increase in cost for First-Class mail, the U.S. Postal Service will introduce a First-Class mail global forever stamp. The new stamp will allow customers to mail letters anywhere in the world at a set price of $1.10. Johnson said this is the first time a global forever stamp is being sold.

The new 46 cent domestic forever stamp will let customers to mail letters anywhere in the U.S. Forever stamps are always good for mailing a one-ounce letter anytime in the future regardless of price changes.
Before forever stamps were introduced, additional postage had to be added after rate increases.

Highlights of new single-piece First-Class mail pricing effective Jan. 27 include additional ounces unchanged at 20 cents and for postcards, a 1 cent increase to 33 cents.

Prices for all products (mailing and shipping services) will increase by 4 percent, while prices for mailing services such as regular letters and advertising matter, will increase 2.8 percent. The Postal Regulatory Service will review prices before they become effective Jan. 27.

Also starting in January, several new shipping services will be available. Free tracking will be offered for all competitive packages, including retail Priority Mail and just renamed Parcel Post, now called Standard Post.

New customers shipping critical mail letters and flats will now have the option of receiving a signature on delivery as part of the service.

A number of flat-rate boxes and envelopes for Express Mail and Priority Mail will continue to be offered. New flat rate Priority Mail prices include small box, $5.80; medium box, $12.35; large box, $16.85; large APO/FPO boxes, $14.85; regular envelopes, $5.60; legal envelopes, $5.75; and padded envelopes, $5.95.

Johnson said the USPS receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund operations.
