Rosie Larson is collecting items for a charity mitten tree that is set up at First Community Credit Union in Valley City. Other drop sites are at Prairie Frame Shop, Miller Motors, Mane Tamer and Barnes County's North Dakota State University Extension Office at the Barnes County Courthouse.

Larson told the Times-Record that the mitten tree began as a dream she has had since she was a little girl and saw a Christmas tree decorated with mittens in the window of a bank in Detroit Lakes, Minn. The tree was part of a charity campaign to help those in need during the holiday season.

For the 38th straight year, Larson, with the help of her husband Daryl and children and grandchildren, has organized a mitten tree in Valley City for her local charity organization, Valley City Cares. The tree helps provide those in need with mittens, gloves, boots, scarves, toys and other donated items during the holiday season.

Larson asks that items be dropped off either at the tree or at other drop sites by Dec. 21 to ensure adequate time for items to be distributed for Christmas.

Larson said she gives items collected to families in need that have been recommended to her. She said those who know a family who may need assistance this holiday season should call her at 701-845-0688.
