VC Post 60 Baseball Sweeps Fairmount/Hankinson
The Valley City Post 60 American Legion baseball team saved its best for the later innings in a double header sweep of Fairmount/Hankinson on the road Thursday.
Post 60 won 11-9 in the first game, then won 13-4 in the second game.
In the first game, Post 60 was down 8-3 entering the top of seventh, but scored six runs in the seventh to go up 9-8.
The inning included doubles by Josh Magnuson and Chase Carpenter, whose hit had two runs batted in and scored the final run of the inning.
Fairmount/Hankinson then tied it with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Valley City scored the winning runs in the top of the ninth when Jaden Keys had a two-RBI double.
Keys and Spencer Meyer split the game on the mound. Keys went three innings with five hits allowed and seven strikeouts. Meyer went six innings with only three runs allowed, two hits, and five strikeouts.
Meyer also went 3-5 with one run and an RBI. Ben Sorenson went 2-3 with a run and a two-RBI single in the seventh inning.
In the second game, Valley City trailed 4-1 after the second inning, but tied it with three runs in the third and then had a nine-run fourth inning to win it.
Josh Gilbertson, Josh Magnuson and Troy Anderson split time on the mound. Gilbertson pitched two innings, allowing three hits and four runs with four strikeouts. Magnuson, who was credited with the win, and Anderson each pitched one inning. Both pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
Post 60 plays today at Great Bend at 5:30 p.m. to start the final week of its regular season.

Babe Ruth Playing Final Home Game
The Valley City Babe Ruth baseball team finishes its regular season today with a double header with Fargo at Charlie Brown Memorial Field. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
The team will then have a few days off before starting the District 6 tournament July 21-24 in Steele.

July 11 Ladies Day at Country Club
21 golfers recorded scores  for the day with Mary Tangen having low scratch with a 47 and Kelly Bennefeld had low net of 31.
The Game of the Day was “Odd Holes” and there was a tie at 29 with Mary Tangen, Sheryl Hanson and Lori Justessen as winners. Low putts was 15 with Vi Egan, Nancy King and Kelly Bennefeld tie for low total.
The Margaret Halvorson handicap tournament is scheduled to start July 18.  Sign up now. Participants must be members of the Ladies Association and have a handicap.

VC Jr. Open Accepting Registration
Online registration is open for the 2012 Valley City Jr. Open tennis tournament, which will take place July 20-21.
The USTA-sanctioned Level 6 tournament is open to boys aged 10-18 and girls aged 10-18.
Entry is $35 per player, although a USTA membership is required.

RedHawks Win 12th Straight Game
FARGO — Fargo/Moorhead Redhawks centerfielder Buddy Sosnoskie had an RBI triple to tie Sunday’s 6-3 win over Grand Prairie in the fifth inning, but it was Jon Gaston’s two-run single in the seventh that secured a four-game sweep of the AirHogs and the team’s league-best 12th straight win.
Fargo-Moorhead trailed 3-2 in the fifth when Sosnoskie hit a triple off the left field wall, scoring Zach Penprase and tying the game before Sosnoskie tried to reach home on an overthrow, but was tagged out at the plate by Grand Prairie catcher Zane Chavez.
Carlo Cota began a rally in the seventh with a double and was followed by Penprase who hit a line drive single to right center and gave the RedHawks a 4-3 lead. After Sosnoskie singled and Eric Campbell walked, Gaston hit a line drive up the middle picking up two RBIs and extending the lead to 6-3.
Fargo-Moorhead hits the road for a three-game series in Sioux Falls starting Monday before heading to Wichita to face the Central Division leading Wingnuts in a four-game series.
