Jansen Invite Brings 30 XC Teams to VC; Local Digest

Jansen Invite story
by Scott Schlaufman
Every year, the Valley City High School cross country team hosts the Bill Jansen Invitational meet, and one thing never changes — the size.
"It's generally bigger than most of them," Valley City cross country coach Brian Engelhard said.
This year's race takes place 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bjornson Park Golf Course.
Over 500 runners from 30 schools across the state are signed up to race in the event, which runs junior high and junior varsity races as well.
The 30 schools include 10 from Class A, as well as top Class B teams including Hillsboro and Lisbon.
The race is named after longtime Valley City coach Bill Jansen, and his son, also named Bill Jansen, will be bringing his team from Rugby to the meet, Engelhard said.
Engelhard said the concession stand at the race serves as a fundraiser for the VCHS music boosters.
Both Barnes County North and Valley City are scheduled to race in the meet.

Pool A, which includes Valley City High School, and pool B, which includes Valley City's JV team, will play at Valley City High School. Pool C, which includes Maple Valley, will play at the Rec. Center.
Pool play matches will be two sets to 25 points and championship matches will be a best of three.

VCHS Tennis swept by North
Sometimes a score in sports is deceiving, as was the case in the Valley City High School tennis team's 9-0 loss at Fargo North Thursday.
"In a match against the No. 2 team in the East, we played our best tennis of the year," coach Matt Nielson said. "Everything that we talked about happened. We were overmatched – but everyone gave their all, was intense, and believed that they could win the next point.
"We could walk away at the end of this match with our heads held high because we did everything we could to win the match"
The play was highlighted by a strong doubles match where Dustin Miller and Ricky Paulson saved four match points in the second second set.
The team played a 3-2 match with mandan this morning and will take 12 players to the West Fargo Invitational Saturday.
