Hi-Liner Hall of Fame announces 2012 class

The Hi-Liner Hall of Fame committee is pleased to announce the induction class for 2012. This group of seven individuals and one team will be recognized during the VCHS homecoming parade and the homecoming football game on Friday, September 28.

Below are the 2012 Hi-Liner Hall of Fame biographies:

1971 Girls Golf Team
The 1971 state championship golf team was coached by Roger Merganthal. Ann Ertelt was the singles state medalist and teamed up with Sandy Schindler to capture the doubles championship. Schindler also placed third overall individually. The state championship team consisted of Ann Ertelt, Paulette Anderson, Connie Huber, Pandy Kupitz, and Sandy Schindler.

Ann (Ertelt) Scott – Class of 1972
Ann was a standout golfer in the fall and runner for the track team in the spring as a Hi-Liner. In golf, Ann won the state doubles championship and finished runner-up in singles, while leading the Hi-Liners to the state championship in 1970. The following year, Ann repeated as doubles champion and added the singles medalist trophy in leading the Hi-Liners their second consecutive state championship. Ann was also an integral part of the 1972 state championship track team, running a leg on the winning 880yd medley relay team.

Danni (Dew) Rowekamp-Class of 1991
Dani was a busy athlete during her time at VCHS, competing cross-country, volleyball and track. Dani was a two-time all conference and all-state runner in cross-country in 1988 and 1991, and was the individual conference champion in 1988. Dani was also named all-conference in volleyball during her tenure at VCHS. On the track, Dani was a member of the 1988 state champion 3200M-relay team. Dani’s running success continued at VCSU where she qualified individually for the national cross-country meet in the fall of 1992, and still holds the VCSU school record in the 5000M run.

Michael Fitzner-Class of 1992
Michael Fitzner was active in football, basketball, and golf during his days at VCHS. Michael was named team captain and all conference in football during his senior campaign in 1991. On the hardwood, Michael was named all conference following his junior season in1991 and was named to both the all conference and all state teams following his senior season in 1992. Michael also earned all conference honors during the 1992 golf season. Upon graduation from VCHS, Michael was a three-year starter on the basketball team at Wayne State College.

Travis Bjerke-Class of 1993
Travis Bjerke was a standout football and basketball player while attending VCHS. On the football field, Travis earned all-conference honors during his junior season in 1991 and was named both all conference and all state after his senior year in 1992. Travis was a three-year letter winner in basketball and was named all conference and all state in 1992 and 1993. Travis attended the University of Minnesota-Crookston, was named all conference in football in 1996 and 1997, and was recognized as an honorable mention-All American in 1997.

Andrew Zaun-Class of 1996
Andrew excelled in both football and track during his days as a Hi-Liner. Andrew was the state track champion in the javelin in 1996. On the football field, Andrew was selected team MVP of the team in 1995. He was also two-time all conference performer in 1994 and 1995, as well as an all state selection in 1995. Andrew attended the University of North Dakota and was a three-year starter at fullback for the Fighting Sioux.

Natalie (Birchem) Portratz-Class of 1997
Natalie shined in both basketball and gymnastics at VCHS. As a four-year starter on the basketball team, Natalie was a three-time all conference performer from 1994-1996 and was named to the all-state team in 1996. As a gymnast, Natalie was named all conference three times as well as being an individual state qualifier from 1992-1994. Natalie continued playing basketball at both the University of Mary and VCSU.

Tricia Schilling – Class of 1997
Tricia excelled in volleyball, basketball, and track for the Hi-Liners. She was a four year starter in volleyball and was named to the all-conference and all-state teams her senior year. Tricia was a two-time captain and an Optimist All-Star selection. In basketball at VCHS, Tricia was a two-year starter, was an all-conference selection, team captain, and a Lions All-Star selection. Tricia also participated in track, qualifying for the state track meet four years. While attending Northern State University, Tricia was also a four-year starter on the volleyball squad. She was a first-team all-conference selection in 2000 as well as a three-time Academic All-American. Tricia holds the Northern State University career record for assists and sits in the top ten in numerous categories.
