Evenson is survived by wife Dotty; daughter Deborah Ramsay; son Jeffrey Evenson, a medical doctor; and several grandchildren. He also served as an honor guard with the American Vets Club. Evenson was a member of the American Legion, AmVets, Pine to Prairie Girl Scout Council and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.Valley City Mayor Bob Werkhoven said Monday that Evenson served on the Valley City City Commission from 2002 to 2006, 2006 to 2010 and from 2010 to 2012.Werkhoven said he worked with Evenson as fellow city officials for a number of years, and in 2010, when city officials were concerned with Devils Lake Outlet issues, both went up to Devils Lake a number of times.“Ken was from the Lakota area originally, and when we went to meetings in these areas, it was always nice to have Ken there, because he knew a lot of those people. He helped us (Valley City officials) communicate with those people,” Werkhoven said.Said Werkhoven, “I also thought he did a good job on public works (Evenson's portfolio on the city commission). He was real helpful on the Devils Lake issues – he knew a lot.”Jerry Hieb, chairman of the Barnes County Water Resource District, said Monday that Evenson, who was vice chairman of the district, has been running meetings since April because Hieb has been ill.“He (Evenson) has been very active. I was very surprised when he passed away. He was a very concerned guy on water issues, and he took a very active position on the board. All five of us put our heads together, and come up with the same answers. I've know him (Evenson) a long time, and he was very active in funerals (helping provide honors as an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion),” Hieb said.Evenson's daughter said Tuesday her father served in the U.S. Army in Georgia and Arizona from 1958 until 1961.He spent a year working as a lineman in Lakota before moving to southeast North Dakota, Ramsey said.Along with serving as a local public official, Ramsey said her father loved working with model trains, and a room of his house was dedicated to the hobby. “He loved his model trains – he collected them.”“He also liked watching my son (Zeth Ramsey) play football. He plays for the University of Colorado at Mesa,” Ramsay said.Ramsay, now a master teacher teaching other teachers in Eagle, Colo., said her father loved volunteering “in many different things. He loved his community. Valley City was his heart and soul. We tried to get him to move to Colorado, but he wouldn't – he really loved Valley City.”A service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Valley City. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church on Thursday afternoon. Interment will be in the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery near Mandan, N.D., on Friday.
