The man went into the river early Monday when the rubber raft carrying him and two other students capsized. Two of the students were rescued and taken to Mercy Hospital where they were treated for hypothermia. First responders from various agencies searched the river below the Little Dam in Valley City all day Monday and Tuesday morning. Just after 1 a.m. Tuesday, a 9-1-1 call was placed reporting that the caller heard screams coming from the river, according to VCFD Chief Gary Retterath. Two of the men were rescued by Valley City Police Officer Sean Hagen and Sergeant Cody Thibert along with a group of citizens. The two remain in Mercy Hospital where they are recovering from hypothermia.An e-mail from VCSU President Dr. Steve Shirley later confirmed that the young men were all VCSU students.The Valley City Fire Department, VCPD and Valley Water Rescue from Fargo searched the river near the dam throughout Monday without success. The water level in the Sheyenne River was lowered to accommodate the search when officials lowered the output from the Baldhill Dam to just 100 CFS. Crews then searched the area in boats, with divers, dogs and by using sonar.
