The Valley City High School cross country season was off to a hot start at the Jamestown "Orr"iginals Cross Country Meet at Centennial Forest Course, with temperatures in the high 80’s and humidity to match. The young Hi-Liners performed well in the overall competition of 15 teams, especially with many appearing in their first-ever meet.
Casey Engelhard led the boys with a 28th-place finish in the Varsity division. Mikaylah Ross, Cherrie Varner, and Jessica Ronning ended up on the awards stand with their strong Junior Varsity performances. The JV girls finished 3rd as a team at the meet behind Barnes County North and Shanley.
Casey Engelhard finished 28th with a time of 20:10 in the Boys Varsity 5K. Nathan Johnson took 61st at 23:18.
Barbara Zubrod placed 56th at 19:32 in the Girls' Varsity 4K.
Mikey Meester finished 38th at 18:54 in the Boys' Junior Varsity 4K. Noah Plagens came through 54th at 20:40 and Jack Jordan finished 61st at 22:02.
The Hi-Liners took third place overall in the Girls' Junior Varsity 3K. Mikaylah Ross finished 6th at 13:35, Cherrie Varner came through in 8th at 13:39, Jessica Ronning 17th at 14:05, Jamie Ronning 22nd at 14:28, Eliza Schueneman 60th at 16:38, Mikayla Wolla 80th at 18:09, and Molly Dockter 86th at 19:04.
The Hi-Liners hope to field complete teams this week when eight more runners will be ready at the Valley City State meet on Friday, which starts at 2 p.m. at the Valley City Country Club.
