Spring officially arrived--and don't mind the piles of snow. The Valley State University Viking women took their home opener, a double-header, against the Mayville State Comets. It took only until the penultimate week of the season, and scratching out a softball field at Shelly Ellig Field at the Lokken Football Stadium, but softball was played. The teams split the two games with the Vikings the home team in the first game, and the Comets the home team in the second.
Katrina Newman took the circle for the Comets in game one, and delivered fire and strikes, but she also put Vikings on base with walks. Samantha Nalley threw for the Vikings, gave up a solo homer in the second inning, but settled down in the later innings, working a knee-buckling change-up into strikes and ground-outs.
The Comets came out strong, going up 3-1 into the bottom of the third, but the Viking bats took life and started teeing off on Newman. The Vikings tied the game in the third with a two-run triple from Courtney Shadlock, and then in the fifth and six innings plated five more runs.
The Comets scored two in the top of the seventh, but they weren't enough. The Vikings won the first game 8-5.
