Special to the Times-Record
A new program has been started at Washington Elementary this year. It is called Battle of the Books, which goes along with February being reading month. The goals of the program are to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension, and promote academic excellence.
Lists of books are chosen and questions are written for all grade levels. Teams are made up of 3-4 students who individually read the book. There were four books to read this year. Then the teams meet together with their coach, a parent volunteer, to be quized on the contents of the book. Questions begin with the words “In which book...” so that the answer will always be a title and author.
Judges for the competition are Washington Elementary teachers and student teachers from VCSU.
There are 76 students participating.
Teams had to choose a team name and create a team poster. The posters have been on display the entire month of February .
The sixth graders had a t-shirt design contest for the battle. Many students participated and the students voted on the best design. Wesley Dawes won the t-shirt contest.
The “battle” will take place at Washington Elementary on Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 3:30-5 p.m. The award ceremony will be in front of the entire student body on Wednesday, Feb. at 2:15 p.m. in the gym at Washington.
