The Kiwanis Club of Jamestown is looking for donations and volunteers for its third Kids Against Hunger food packaging event to be held in March.
The event will take place on March 2, at the Buffalo Mall in Jamestown. Event co-chair Janna Bergstedt hopes to raise $30,000 and have 250 volunteers to package meals for those less fortunate.
Kids Against Hunger is a humanitarian organization dedicated to reducing the number of hungry children in the United States and to feed starving children around the world by packaging a highly nutritious, vitamin-fortified soy-rice casseroles with the help of volunteers in various locations.
Every six seconds, a child dies from hunger-related causes, said Bergstedt.
Kiwanis International is an organization dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time, said Bergstedt.
When Kids Against Hunger approached the Jamestown Kiwanis about helping out, the project seemed like a natural, after all Kiwanis is about helping children, said Bergstedt.
So far, the Jamestown Kiwanis has sponsored two kids Against Hunger food packaging events.
The first, in 2011, raised $23,000 and volunteers, including about 20 from Litchville and Marion churches and church youth groups, packaged 100,000 meals. Each meal consisted of rice, soy protein, chicken flavoring and dehydrated vegetables. Each meal cost the organization about $1.38 and can feed six children.
The second event was about six months later when a generous person gave the Kiwanis a donation of up to $25,000 in matching funds, if the Kiwanis could raise another $25,000, which they did. That event produced 225,000 meal packages.
Since it began, Kids Against Hunger has packaged about a billion meals for hungry children around the world.
For its upcoming event, the Kiwanis still need donations and volunteers.
It’s a good volunteer opportunity for church youth groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, churches or individuals. The minimum age is probably around eight, but Bergstedt has seen 80-year-olds volunteering.
It’s especially good for children, though.
“It’s such a good learning thing. They can give back,” said Bergstedt.
The Jamestown event will be held on Sat. March 2, at the Buffalo Mall. Volunteers can work at either of two shifts from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
