The Valley City State University Community School of the Arts is entering its new year with a new director, Amy Tahran.
Shari Larson, whose last day as director of the community school of the arts was Friday, said Tahran will take over the position in time for when spring semester classes begin Jan. 14.
Larson said VCSU has been doing the community school since 1994, and it is open to anyone in the Valley City area interested in taking classes in the fine arts, including adults, elementary school students, high school students and college students.
“We've been giving lessons since about 1995,” Larson said.
Although connected with the university, Larson said the school of the arts is operated separately from VCSU.
“The university appreciates us being here to bring the community in and become more familiar. It brings (new) people onto campus,” Larson said.
Classes start for the spring semester on Jan. 14 and end the first week in May, “and start up again in the fall,” Larson said.
Costs of offering vary depending on lengths of lessons. On average, Larson said, lessons are $17 each and course average 15 lessons per semester.
Registrations and payments are due by Jan. 2, 2013.
