FARGO — When the North Dakota State University football team returned to camp last week, there was a noticeable change to the team's familiar digs.
Gate City Bank Field at The Fargodome is now sporting a brand new Astroturf GameDay Grass 3DH Stadium Surfacing football field turf surface, replacing old turf from years' past.
"It's going to be a great, great surface for us," NDSU football coach Craig Bohl said at the team's annual media day Friday. "It was about time we made a change and we appreciate the leadership in our community doing that."
The surface is similar to the one installed at Valley City State University's Lokken Stadium last summer. The new turf was installed over the summer and was used during the team's camps last week.
By all accounts, the turf is a significant upgrade.
Bohl called the old turf "cruel and unusual punishment."
"My back used to kill me going out there," he said. "That surface was an outdated surface, so we really appreciate where we're at."
Quarterback Brock Jensen said the team was "blessed" to get the turf.
"I love it," he said. "It's an absolutely awesome surface to play on, a lot better than (the old turf.)
"I got permanent scars from that other turf. That stuff was no good. We're finally able to get new turf this year, so we're all extremely happy about that."
