The Valley City Babe Ruth baseball team offense was a bit more sluggish in its first game Monday than coach Lance Lukes would have liked it to be, but later recovered for the second game of a double header with Lisbon.
But in Tuesday’s 20-2 district win in Edgeley, there were no early jitters.
The team put together at least three runs in each inning, ending the game after five, and had 15 total hits.
“It’s always tough coming from a game like Monday,” Lukes said. “There can be times where players get set in looking for the walks and stop being aggressive at the plate.”
“We were aggresive and hit the ball well and didnt sit back and wait for walks.”
Offensively, Valley City was led by Jesse Johnson, who used his speed to his advantage throughout the game. He finished 4-5 at the plate and hit for the cycle, which included an inside the park home run. He scored all four times he reached base and also had six runs batted in.
“Jesse Johnson had himself a great day at the plate,” Lukes said. “He always had runners on when he had his at bats and found ways to drive them in.”
Dalton Ondracek, Alex Milender, Casey Engelhard and Jonah Wolla also had multi-hit days.
Ondracek got the win on the mound, allowing five hits and two runs, one earned.
