Valley City State University junior Darien Moore won the NAIA national championship in the hammer throw Thursday in Marion, Ind. Moore finished with a throw of 200 feet, beating his closest opponent six feet. Moore will compete in the shot put, which takes place at 2 p.m. today. VCSU’s Amber Volanti missed placing in the javelin by under a foot.
VCHS softball advances in EDC tourney
The Valley City High School softball team avenged a loss from its season opener, beating Red River 5-1 in the first round of the Eastern Dakota Conference tournament.
Allison Baasch and Jessica Denholm had two hits each in the win, which sets up the Hi-Liners for a game with West Fargo today in the championship semifinals at 4:30 p.m.
A win over the Packers will guarantee the team a spot in the Class A state championship. A loss will put the Hi-Liners in a state qualifying game Saturday.
