VCHS softball wins
The Valley City High School softball team had little issue at the plate in a double header sweep of Fargo Davies Tuesday in Fargo.
Over two wins — 5-3 in game one, 15-1 in game two — the Hi-Liners combined for 29 hits, including 20 in the second game.
The Hi-Liners were led by Amanda Tangen, who went 6-9 over the two games.
In the 15-1 win, she went 4-5 at the plate, including two triples. She had four RBI and scored twice in the game.
The Hi-Liners opened the day with the 5-3 win. Niether VC starting pitcher Keely Fogarty or Kendra Pahl, her counterpart on Davies, allowed a run for the first three innings.
VC then scored two in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Each team then scored two in the sixth inning.
Both pitchers threw a complete game. Fogarty finished with seven strikeouts and only three hits allowed.
Valley City then dominated the second game early, taking a 5-1 lead in the second inning, adding two more in the fourth inning, then combining for eight runs in the sixth and seventh.
Jessica Denholm, Brooke Breckheimer and Danica Diegel all had three hits in the game. Denholm also threw a complete game, allowing only four hits with two strikeouts.
The win keeps the Hi-Liners in the EDC’s top four.
VCHS tennis loses
The VCHS tennis team nearly pulled an upset of Fargo Davies, the likely four seed in the Eastern Dakota Conference, falling 5-4 in a home match to the Eagles.
Coach Matt Nielson said the team was very close in the losses it had, and eight of the night matches were close.
“I am so proud of all of our girls,” he said. “They went out and played tennis the way it should be played. We are playing our game, playing every point to the best of our ability, believing, moving our feet, not being tentative (for the most part), and having fun.
“Today, we played as a team. We supported each other like a true team. We believed in each other and ourselves. Even though the scoreboard shows 5-4 in the wrong direction – I believe this match will boost our confidence as a team and could be a springboard for things to come.”
