The Valley City High School softball team scored three runs in the final two innings of a win at Grand Forks Central Thursday.
Coach Jason Lindgren said the Hi-Liners wanted to get ahead early against the Knights, and the girls did just that.
The Hi-Liners went ahead 3-0 in the second inning, getting key RBI from Allison Baasch (on a two-RBI single) and a sacrifice bunt by Jasmine Stevens.
Amanda Tangen had a leadoff walk in the third inning, then stole second and was driven in by Dierra Diegel to take a 4-0 lead.
Grand Forks narrowed the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Valley City struck again in the top of the sixth.
Jessica Denholm and Brooke Breckheimer got one base to start the inning and eventually scored on a double by Baasch, who finished the game with four RBI.
Grand Forks made it 6-5 in the bottom of the inning, but the Hi-Liners had one more run in the seventh to put it away.
Keely Fogarty threw a complete game for the Hi-Liners, allowing seven hits with eight strikeouts. Grand Forks was hurt by seven total errors.
It was the first ever meeting between the teams, Lindgren said, and leaves the Hi-Liners at 6-5 overall, 5-4 in the Eastern Dakota Conference.
