Valley City State University’s spring semester is coming to a close, and with graduation right around the corner, the university has announced its keynote, graduate and undergraduate commencement speakers.
Ken Astrup, General Manager of the Dakota Plains Cooperative in Valley City will be the keynote speaker at VCSU’s graduation ceremony on May 12 in the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse in southwest Valley City.
“I’m very honored to have the opportunity,” said Astrup, a 1973 VCSU graduate. “Valley City State University has meant a lot to me over the years. I think it’s a great institution and I’m honored to have the opportunity to speak.”
Astrup is a member of the VCSU Foundation Board of Directors and has received the VCSU Distinguished Alumni Award.
Jennifer Crom will give the graduate student address. Crom is the first student to complete VCSU masters of education degree with a concentration in teaching English language learners. She is currently a teacher at Global Studies Elementary School in Sioux Falls, S.D., where approximately 30 percent of her students are ELL students.
Nick Faure, a chemistry, biology and health science major, is graduating Summa Cum Laude and giving the undergraduate student address. Faure served as president of the VCSU Pre-Professional Club, treasurer of the Spanish Club, was one of the Viking Ambassadors and was named 2011 Student Employee of the year. Faure has also studied in China and Peru, and spoke to the State Legislature in the winter of 2011 to help convince the law makers to restore funding for the Rhoades Science Center renovation and expansion which is currently underway on the VCSU campus.
