Weather causes postponements
Local baseball teams had games postponed due to poor weather over the weekend.
The Valley City High School baseball team had its Friday double header with Fargo North postponed and the Valley City State University team had its Saturday double header in Jamestown postponed.
Makeup dates were not announced for the high school game. The VCSU/Jamestown series will conclude today at 3 p.m. in Jamestown.
VCSU golfers do well at Jamestown
The Valley City State University mens and womens golf teams finished well at the Jamestown College Spring Invitational Friday in Jamestown.
The VCSU men had three players finish in the top five of the standings, and the team tied for second place with Dickinson State. Jamestown won the meet with a score of 305. The other schools had 313.
VCSU’s Taylor Henrickson finished second at the meet with a score of 75. Ryan Mehus tied for third at 76, and Ryan LaNoue tied for fifth place at 77.
Jamestown’s Tommy Rockis won the meet with a score of 73.
The Viking women didn’t have enough golfers to get a team score, but Ashley Hinrichs took second place with a 94 and Lacey Nelson took seventh with a 98.
Dickinson State’s Caitlin Hurlock won the tournament with a 91 and the Blue Eagles took first with 387 points.
VCSU baseball loses two
The Valley City State University baseball team kept it close, but was hurt in the late innings in a double header sweep to Jamestown Saturday at Charlie Brown Memorial Field.
The Vikings lost 5-3 and 4-2 to the Jimmies, allowing the deciding runs in the final inning.
In the 5-3 loss, VCSU went up 2-0 in the third inning and added another run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-1. The Jimmies responded with two runs in the sixth inning to tie it 3-3.
The teams were tied again until the eighth inning, when the Jimmies’ leadoff hitter had a single. The Vikings then had two errors, which allowed two runs to score.
Valley City starting pitcher Ronnie Blagg pitched 7.1 innings and allowed four runs, one earned, and Joey Duttenhefer allowed one unearned run. Preston Jensen and Collin Waldner combined for four of the Vikings’ five hits.
In the second game, Jamestown took a 1-0 lead in the second inning but Valley City tied it with a run in the bottom of the third. The teams matched a run in the fifth inning to make it 2-2.
The Jimmies had timely hitting in the top of the seventh inning, getting a leadoff walk from Jonathan Minchella, and a double by Joe Perez. Kyle Mallory then had a two-run single, scoring both Ben Holan (a pinch runner) and Perez.
Valley City’s Ryan Shaw threw a complete game and had six strikeouts.
The Vikings combined for 11 hits, including two from four players. Scott Stephenson had two hits and both RBI for the Vikings.
VCHS softball loses two
The Valley City High School softball team had plenty of offense, but couldn’t get wins at the West Fargo Invite.
The Hi-Liners lost 12-2 in the first game to Watertown (S.D.) and 16-11 in the second game to Bishop Ryan.
Against Watertown, the Hi-Liners had only three hits and put together two runs early in the game, but were hurt by a four-run first inning and a five-run seventh inning.
Danica Diegel pitched a complete game for the Hi-Liners with one strikeout. Allison Baasch, Jessica Denholm and Amanda Tangen had one hit each.
In the second game, the Hi-Liners put together 11 runs on 11 hits but struggled in the field with 10 errors.
Of the 16 runs allowed by pitcher Jessica Denholm, none were earned.
The Hi-Liners held an 11-10 lead entering the seventh inning, but allowed six runs from Bishop Ryan in the top of the seventh.
