After dropping the first two games on Friday at the Morningside College Invitational Softball Tournament, the Valley City State University softball team rattled off four wins in a row to finish the tournament 4-2.
In game one on Friday, Bellevue (Neb.) University scored five runs in the bottom of the first and led the entire way in a 7-2 victory. The Vikings mustered only six hits with freshman Shayna Taffinder leading the way with a 2-2 performance at the plate. Jen Shadlock took the loss for the Vikings in the circle.
Northwestern (Iowa) College used a three-run top of the seventh rally to overcome a 3-1 Viking lead and steal a 4-3 victory from the Vikings. Valley City State staked a 3-0 lead after the first but couldn’t score again in the game and the Crusaders hit back to back doubles in the top of the seventh to plate three runs for the victory. Katie McBride pitched seven innings surrendering two earned runs in the loss.
On Saturday the Vikings got their first win of the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Midland Lutheran (Neb.) University. The Vikings again only tallied six hits with seniors Jen Shadlock and Cyndi Figol both going two for four at the plate as Shadlock scored twice with Figol tacking on the other Viking run. McBride went the distance for the Vikings picking up the win, allowing only three hits behind some sold Valley City State defense.
In the second game of the day, the Viking bats exploded for sixteen hits to blank Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 13-0 in five innings. Adrianna Boychuk hit her way to a three for four performance and she was followed by Figol and Jane Pettit who each collected two hits. McBride picked up the second win of the day, throwing four innings before Paige Brandvold threw a perfect fifth inning in relief.
On Sunday the Vikings kept their win streak rolling beating Mount Marty (S.D.)College in game one by an 8-0 score. Figol again collected two hits in the game along with three RBI while fellow senior Sara Gullickson went a perfect two for two and scored two runs for the Vikings. Hayley Bevan and Jen Shadlock each posted two RBI for Valley City State. Katie McBride notched another win, pitching five innings of two hit shut-out softball, striking out nine and walking none. The Viking defense played perfect with zero errors in the game.
The Vikings collected a big win over host Morningside College to finish the tournament and run their win streak to four in a row. The 5-1 victory was sparked by two run sixth and a three run seventh for the Vikings. Cyndi Figol put the Vikings up 2-1 on a suicide squeeze in the sixth inning while Jen Shadlock hit a bases clearing two out double in the top of the seventh to seal the Viking win. Katie McBride pitcher her way to a fourth victory in two days, scattering seven hits over seven innings, striking out four and walking two.
With the four game win streak the Vikings record now stands at 14-9 on the season. Valley City State travels to Jamestown College on Tuesday for the Dakota Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Game times are set for 3:00 and 5:00 PM.
