The Valley City High School track and field team started the indoor season Saturday at the Concordia High School Invitational in Moorhead, Minn.
Even though neither the boys or girls team finished towards the top of the team standings, they still had plenty of standouts. For the girls team, which placed fifth of six teams with 64 points, the top finishers were largely seniors.
The team was led by senior Molly Willson, who finished second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.820. She also had a second place finish as part of the 800 meter relay team, a third place finished in the 55 meter dash.
In many of those races, though, fellow senior Jenna Jacob wasn’t far behind. Jacob finished fourth in the 55, nine hundredths of a second behind Willson, and took fifth in the 200. She was also on the second place 800 relay team with Willson.
The top non-senior performances came from freshman Abby Brown finished third in the triple jump, and Tonya Van Dyke, who finished third in the shot put.
The boys team finished sixth of seven teams.
The Hi-Liners’ top finisher was senior Paul Viland, who took third in the pole vault.
Also in the field, junior Dereck Durheim took fifth in the pole vault. The top finisher on the track was freshman Casey Engelhard, who had a sixth place finish in the 800 meter run, and a ninth place finish in the 1,600 meter run.
