The Valley City State University Vikings will face the No. 3 ranked College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in the opening round of the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Vikings and Lady Bobcats will square off on the second day of opening round action on Thursday, March 8 at 1:45 pm.
College of the Ozarks (29-3) won the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC) tournament to earn an automatic bid to Sioux City. The Bobcats are making their 18th National Tournament appearance and have a 26-17 overall record in the tournament.
College of the Ozarks has won 20 straight games and, earlier in the season got wins against VCSU’s former Dakota Athletic Conference opponents Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines.
Junior Morgan Smith, ranked tenth in the nation in scoring, leads the Bobcats in scoring at 19.6 points per game and is the only player to average double figures.
The Vikings (19-14) are making their second straight NAIA National Tournament after appearing for the first time in the program’s history last year.
Valley City State earned one of two automatic bids in the Association of Independent Institutions Conference Tournament last weekend when they knocked of then seventh ranked and rival Jamestown College 58-50.
Valley City State struggled early in the year, jumping out to a 3-7 record before winning 11 of the next 12 games, including an eight game win streak, to put them back on track for another national tournament run.
Men miss tournament
The Valley City State mens basketball team missed an at-large bid for the NAIA Division II Mens Basketball Tournament.
Brackets for the tournament were released Wednesday, with the Vikings narrowly missing the cut.
Rival Jamestown received the 10th seed in the tournament.
The Vikings finish the season with 20-10 record overall.
