The No. 19 Valley City State University mens basketball team outscored Dickinson State University 8-5 in overtime to en route to a 71-68 road win Saturday.
In a rematch of the Dakota Athletic Conference Tip-Off Tournament consolation game just six days prior, the Vikings used balanced scoring and an overtime period to fend off the Blue Hawks for a second straight time.
The Vikings' balance led to four players finishing with 14 points or more.
Juniors Sekani Milligen and John Raquel scored 16 points and led the Vikings in scoring. Sylvester Walker and Aaron Duske added 14 points each. Milligen also grabbed seven rebounds.
Both teams struggled shooting from beyond the 3-point line. The Vikings shot only 4-18 for 22 percent and the home Blue Hawks were 4-17.
The win puts the Vikings at 18-6 on the season heading into a top-20 matchup Wednesday with Jamestown College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM at the Jamestown Civic Center.
VCSU women lose in OT
Both Valley City and Dickinson State struggled in the first half Saturday, but Dickinson got hot in the second to pull a 58-53 overtime comeback win over the Vikings.
The Viking defense held the Blue Hawks to just 24% shooting in the first half and allowed only 15 points, but the second half was a different story.
Dickinson State shot 50% from the floor and outscored the Vikings 43-29 in the second half and overtime to pull off the come from behind victory in overtime. The Blue Hawks forced 26 Viking turnovers.
Sophomore Brittany Lehner posted a double-double for the Vikings with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Lehner was joined in double digit scoring by freshman Sierra Evan who also scored 13.
The loss puts the Vikings at 15-10 on the season.
Valley City State travels to Jamestown College Wednesday for a rematch of the Dakota Athletic Conference Tip-Off Tournament championship game. Game time is set for 5:30 PM at the Jamestown Civic Center.
