Only days after the biggest tournament of the year, the Valley City High School wrestling team looked to start the new year fresh with a win against Fargo Davies Tuesday.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned and the Hi-Liners lost 48-30.
The match started with a heavyweight bout between Steven Horner of Valley City and Davies’ Darrek Crissler. Crissler, ranked No. 1 in the state at 220, set the pace for the Eagles as he was able to quickly pin Horner that Crissler dominated from the get go. After the next match ended in a pin for Fargo’s Bryce Burnside over Cole McGough, the Hi-Liners got a spark from eighth grader Jakob Ashline. Ashline beat Anthony Nemer 9-6 to give the Hi-liners the three points.
The next four matches ended with pins by Davies’ Dillion Finch and Cole Alexander and two forfeits against Valley City, which gave the Eagles 24 more points and a 36-3 lead.
With the higher weight classes, though, the Hi-Liners got into a win streak as well, and won four straight matches thanks to pins by Taylor Johnson, Zach Doty, and Stephen Radermacher. Shane Undem also helped out in the streak by beating Darren Crissler to cut the lead to 36-24. The Hi-Liners however ran into a road block as Fargo Davies’ Zander Mairs gave the Eagles a boost when he pinned Wyatt Bjornson.
Top ranked Brandon Larson lived up to his status as he was able to easily pin Nick Kiera in the 195 pound match, but it was to no avail as Darrek Crissler beat Valley City’s Brady Beckman to ultimately give the Eagles the victory.
The Hi-Liners wrestle this weekend at the Bismarck Rotary tournament.

The Rebels kept it close and trailed by no nore than three points at the end of each quarter.
Tasha Piehl led LMM with 13 points and Cassie Fick had 11. Beck led PBK and Kelly Carlson had 10.
