Valley City Babe Ruth beat Lisbon twice on the road Thursday night, coming back from a 9-5 fourth-inning deficit for a nine-inning 12-9 District win and surviving a three-run third frame in the 6-3 non-District finisher.
“We didn’t come out playing our best,” Valley City head coach Lance Lukes said. “We were just kind of going through the motions and not putting anything really into it. We left too many runners on base and didn’t execute some of the little things that we need to be doing.”
Valley City led 2-0 after two District innings on Justin Manson’s inside-
the-park home run before Lisbon came alive for four runs in the third and five in the fifth to go ahead 9-5.
Babe Ruth scored a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to force extras at 9-9, and two Valley City triples and a sacrifice fly in the ninth powered the win.
Drew Jacobson pitched six innings for nine runs — four earned — on seven hits, three walks and four strikeouts.
“Drew pitched well enough for us to win,” Lukes said. “He kept us in it early, and then ran into a rough part in the fourth and fifth, but we didn’t give him enough help in the field, either.”
Nate Rodriguez, who came up big on 4-of-4 batting for a double and a triple, scored three runs and drove home two more, pitched three scoreless relief innings on a hit and a walk, and struck out seven.
Reese Hushcka and Brandon Pritchett both put up two hits and a run.
Valley City scored three runs in the first, two in the second and another in the top of the third, and held Lisbon in the home half for the 6-3 final.
Tanner Thomsen threw all three innings on three runs, three hits, three walks and four strikeouts.
Andrew King and Jaden Oestern both went for a double and an RBI, Bryce Nelson and Devin Anderson a hit each.
