A Valley City man died and his wife was injured in a fire at their house early Sunday morning.

Valley City Fire Chief Gary Retterath said Art Kirschenman died and Arlene remains in a Fargo hospital, where she's being treated for smoke inhalation. Her injuries don't appear to be life threatening, Retterath said.

The house was destroyed.

Retterath said the call came in that there was a fire at 204 Sixth Street Northwest at about 2:50 a.m. Sunday. Four trucks and 25 firefighters were on scene.

"We were there until about noon, when we got everything under control," Retterath said.

Retterath said the fire started in the basement but the cause is still under investigation.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross supported responders with food and beverages on scene and will be meeting with Arlene, who is displaced. The home is destroyed. The Red Cross will provide financial assistance for immediate needs, work to replace prescription medications and emotional support with mental health volunteers.
