The Valley City Times-Record plans to run a historical photograph each week submitted by our readers.

Valley City's Gale Hansen said this aerial photo of Valley City shows Ritchie I (Valley City's elementary school), Ritchie II (Valley City's Middle School) and Valley City High School, which Hansen said was nicknamed Ritchie III because the other two Valley City schools of the time were officially Ritchie I and Ritchie II. Hansen said the photograph was "taken by a pilot years ago."

Wes Anderson, curator of the Barnes County Historical Society Museum, said the name comes from attorney Dave Ritchie, a strong supporter of education in Valley City.

Of the three schools, only the high school still stands, now part of the Junior/Senior High School complex.

Anderson said Ritchie I and Ritchie II were torn down in the 1970s.

Photos can be of people, events or places in Barnes County from 10, 20, 30 years ago, or even older. Please submit photographs by email to treditor@times-online.com, or drop them by our office at 146 Third Street NE.
