VC Firefighters Retrieve Gun from Frozen Sheyenne River

Valley City firefighter Lance Coit lays on a raft while he attempts to retrieve a handgun frozen into the Sheyenne River near the Rainbow Bridge in Valley City while firefighter Scott Magnuson helps steer the craft from shore.

The handgun was spotted by a pedestrian Sunday. It's unclear how the handgun made it into the frozen river, though Valley City Police Department Chief Fred Thompson suspects it was thrown in recently since it was frozen into the top few inches of ice.

MV School Consolidation on Jan. 13 Ballot

10 Years Over the Rainbow: Unique Bridge Dedicated 10 Years Ago

Valley City is known for its bridges, and many of the bridges that cross the Sheyenne River have unique components that make them iconic. The Rainbow Bridge on East Main Street, which was rebuilt in 2004 for safety reasons, is one of the few rainbow arch bridges still in use in the U.S. today.

The new Rainbow Bridge, which replaced the Rainbow Arch Bridge, was dedicated almost 10 years ago.
