SCAM ALERT: VCPD Warns of Phone Scam

A scammer has been calling area residents claiming to represent Valley City Public Utilities and demanding credit card payment to keep the resident's power on. This is a scam, according to Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson, that has been attempted in other parts of the country.

According to Lori Glaser of Valley City Public Utilities, several notices are sent out before turning off power to customers. Valley City Public Utilities never calls customers to demand payment.

Student from Israel Earns GED Diploma in Valley City

A young man from Israel traveled all the way to Valley City to earn a GED diploma. Nadiv Swidler, 16, traveled here with his dad Jeff to take the test at the Valley City Adult Learning Center located in the Sheyenne Valley Career and Technical Center this week. Editors note: another news outlet reported the following incident as taking place in April, due to a typographical error in a sworn affidavit. The incident actually took place in August and was promptly reported and transferred to Barnes County. A full law enforcement report was not received by the Barnes County State's Attorney until Sept. 12.

An Arkansas man faces rape charges in Barnes County for an incident that took place during a drive from Cooperstown to Valley City in August.

McDonalds Awaits NDDOT Decision

The North Dakota Department of Transportation has granted Valley City permission to route water from the site planned for a new Valley City McDonald's restaurant into an Interstate 94 drainage ditch.

However, it has not yet reached a decision on granting a permit to drain water from another property about 500 feet east of the site into the same ditch.

Valley City is requesting the permits on behalf of developers of Valley City's planned new McDonald's restaurant, said John Thompson, Valley City District engineer for the state department.

Throwback Thursday: Homecoming 1968

The Valley City Times-Record plans to run a historical photograph each week on Thursdays submitted by our readers.

This week's photograph was of the 1968 Valley City High School homecoming parade and was submitted by Diane Bjerke.

Wes Anderson, curator of the Barnes County Historical Society Museum agreed to start off the series to give our readers an idea what we are looking for.

Photos can be of events or places in Barnes County from 10, 20, 30 years ago, or even older. We will publish at least one submitted photograph every week in the Valley City Times-Record.

PEO Tour of Homes This Week

The P.E.O. Tour of Homes, sponsored by Chapter AZ of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, will be held Sunday, Sept. 21, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Four Valley City area homes and one guest inn will be featured on this year’s tour. They are the homes of Joanne and Tim Kadrmas, 1215 Fifth Ave NW; Jenny and Jerad Enger, 1217 Fifth Ave NW; Alison and Josh Kasowski, 961 9thAve NE; Erin and Luther Dietrich, 907 9thAve NE; and the Red Door Guest Inn, above Unique Antiques at 148 Main St. East. Parking is available between the Dietrich and Kasowski homes as it is a comfortable walking distance.

SA Declines Charges in Fatal Accident

Barnes County States Attorney Carl Martineck Wednesday said he has decided to file no charges against the driver of a pickup truck that struck a 92-year-old woman in Valley City June 22, resulting in her death June 30.

Rita Weber, a pedestrian struck by a pickup truck June 22 in Valley City, died of her injuries.

Weber, 92, was walking along Central Avenue North and was in the crosswalk at Central Avenue North and Sixth Avenue Northwest when she was struck by a Ford F-150 driven by by Robert J. Mittleider, 32, of Valley City.
