Young speedsters compete in VC’s Soap Box Derby

First place winner of the stock division, Christina Sayler of Valley City, exits her car after her winning race. Her car is sponsored by VC Chiropractors. Sayler said she had a lot of fun racing, “Wow!” she said about her winning.

Spectators lined Central Avenue Saturday as they watched rivers speed down the hill in motorless cars sponsored by area businesses.

Competitors in the 17th annual Soap Box Derby were divided into two divisions, stock and super stock. The derby was conducted as a true double-elimination event with each race consisting of two heats against the same opponents. The drivers swapped lanes and wheels between each heat.

With temperatures soaring to almost 90 degrees and winds quite gusty at times. the drivers still had fun racing their gravity-powered race cars.
“Wow,” exclaimed first place stock division Christina Sayler of Valley City, adding she had a lot of fun.
