Vikings split softball series with Bemidji

March 28, 2012

On a cold and windy day, the Valley City State University Vikings dropped the opening game at NCAA Division II opponent Bemidji (Minn.) State 2-0 before rebounding in the second game to salvage a split with a 6-2 victory.
Game one flew by as both pitchers worked quickly and limited each team’s offenses. The Beavers gave pitcher Courtney Anderson a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and it was all the room she needed as Anderson held the Viking bats to just three hits in seven innings.
Valley City State threatened in the top of the fifth, putting the tying and winning runs in scoring position before Anderson induced an inning ending infield pop fly.
Katie McBride pitched well, but was tagged with another 2-0 loss, her third such loss of the season. McBride threw six innings and allowed only five hits. She struck out six and had no walks with only one earned run. Despite the loss, McBride dropped her season ERA to 1.84.
The Viking offense erupted for fourteen hits in the 6-2 win to come away with a road split. Five Vikings collected at least two hits, led by Hilary Kulczewski’s 3-4 performance. Kulczewski also tacked on three RBI to jump her season total to a team high 23.
Jen Shadlock was the benefactor of the big offense for Valley City State. Shadlock allowed eleven hits but pitched out of several Beaver threats to pick up her sixth win of the season. Shadlock induced twelve ground balls and the Viking defense did the rest.
The split puts the Vikings at 10-7 on the season. VCSU travels to Sioux City, Iowa, for the Morningside College Invitational Tournament this weekend.
VCSU baseball games moved home
The Valley City State University baseball team announced Monday that the Dakota Athletic Conference preseason tournament will be played locally.
Saturday’s games, which start at 11 a.m., will be played in Valley City, and the Sunday games will be played in Jamestown.
