The #4 seed Valley City State University Viking Softball team knocked off number five seed Dakota State in the opening round of the Unaffiliated-A.I.I./Frontier National Qualifying Tournament 11-6, then dropped a tough one to #1 seed Dickinson State 3-1.
Valley City State was outhit by the Lady Tâ€™s in the tournament opener 12-11, but the Vikings cashed in on their scoring opportunities scoring five runs in the first and two in the second on their way to the convincing first round victory.
Hilary Kulczewski led the Viking offense with a three for four performance at the plate. Savannah McMillin and Brittany Lehner each collected two hits with Lehner also knocking in three runs for the Vikings.
Mackenzie Hamre and Courtney Shadlock also collected two RBI each.
In the circle, Samantha Nalley picked up the win, scattering twelve hits across seven innings, walking four, striking out seven and surrendering four earned runs.
The timely hit evaded the Vikings versus the tournament host and number one seed Dickinson State Blue Hawks in the second round. Valley City State scored one run in the top of the third inning to stake claim to an early lead, but then would leave seven runners on through the first four innings, failing to break the game open.
