Viking Softball Inches Past Mayville

April 10, 2014

Viking junior catcher/outfielder Savannah McMillin’s walk-off single late Wednesday helped Valley City State sweep Mayville State, 3-1 and 2-1, in a North Star doubleheader at Shelly Ellig Field.

“We had to learn to be patiently aggressive — that was the word of the day,” Viking senior third base Liz Hall Sewell said. “We needed to play solid defense, and once we got on base we came through. For two freshman pitchers to come in, it really showed their mound presence.”

Freshman right-handers Ashley Metcalf and Morgan Nalley picked up complete-game wins.

Valley City State improves to 2-2 in the North Star standings and 13-15 overall.

Thursday’s games at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. have been cancelled, so the Vikings will play a 2 p.m.-and-4 p.m. conference doubleheader on Saturday and a 1 p.m.-and-3 p.m. conference back-to-back Sunday at Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D.
