The Valley City State University club tennis team had a shot at clinching a spot at the USTA National tournament over the weekend in Menominee, Wis., but struggled to get the wins it needed to.
The Vikings competed in the University of Wisconsin — Stout USTA Tennis-On-Campus tournament, and a win would have vaulted the team over North Dakota State University in the standings to clinch a spot for the national tournament in March.
VCSU struggled from the start with only one woman traveling, which meant that VCSU automatically forfeited the womans doubles round and start every match down 6-0. It put all the pressure on the men to not only play well, but hold their opponent to as few games as possible in the mens doubles and singles rounds.
Despite having three of the team's top men traveling, they struggled to win sets in any of their singles or doubles matches.
The Vikings played to a draw with NDSU in the first round of pool play, which set the tone as VCSU eventually lost 30-7. VCSU also lost a pool match to a UW Stout 1 team the Vikings haven't previously had problems with. Instead, the team only managed a win at mixed doubles and lost the match 32-8.
The loss left VCSU in the fifth place match against UW Stout 2, where the tough day continued. VCSU lost 30-5, and only received the default 10 points towards the fall standings.
The club team is now waiting for the final standings in the fall series, which should have NDSU in first place. The Vikings are expected to be in second or third.
The team still could earn a national bid at the sectional championships in February.
