Viking baseball lose to Bison in Fargo; VC Softball swept by Jimmies; VCHS baseball swept

FARGO — The North Dakota State University baseball team capitalized on three first inning errors to jump out to an early lead and eventual 14-4 victory over Valley City State Tuesday at Newman Outdoor Field.
North Dakota State (19-5) had its first four batters go up to the plate before recording an out. NDSU scored five runs in the first inning off of three hits by Nick Colwell, Kyle Kleinendorst and Trevor Jaunich.
NDSU had five different pitchers throw with Anthony Kliniske tossing two scoreless relief innings and earning his first win of the season.
Valley City State starting pitcher Jesse Brooks gave up six runs, two earned, in two innings pitched and recorded his first loss of the season.
Max Casper went 4-for-5 with two RBIs, Zach Wentz went 3-for-4, Nick Anderson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Tim Colwell hit his school-record eighth triple to lead the Bison at the plate.
The Bison had nine different players with hits. Valley City State (8-17) was led by Josh Evans and Casey Clark who had two hits apiece. Both teams left 10 runners on base.
The Vikings continue their season with a four game series at Dickinson State starting Friday.

Softball loses to Jimmies
The Valley City State University softball team was swept by Jamestown in a double header Tuesday.
The Vikings lost the first game 8-2 and lost the second 6-1.
In the opener, the Vikings were limited to only four hits by Jamestown pitcher Jessica Lees.
Jamestown got the first runs of the game, scoring two on a two out rally, then scored runs in each inning following, taking a 3-0 lead after the fourth inning, a 5-0 lead after the fifth and an 8-2 lead after the sixth.
The Vikings got their only runs in the sixth inning. Hayley Bevan started the inning with a single to left field and Jane Pettit hit a double to bring her in. Pettit later scored on a wild pitch.
No Viking finished the game with more than one hit. Pitcher Katie McBride threw a complete game, allowing 12 hits and striking out four.
In the second game, Jamestown snuck a run across in the first inning, but Valley City tied it in the top of the second.
The Vikings were then hurt by two errors in the bottom of the second inning, which gave Jamestown a 3-1 lead. After that, the Vikings couldn’t get a run across, as Jamestown to a 5-1 lead after the third and scored their final run in the fourth.
Valley City was again limited only four hits, with no player getting more than one.
Pitcher Jenn Shadlock threw a complete game and allowed only seven hits.

VCHS baseball swept on road
The Valley City High School baseball team couldn’t muster a run in a double header sweep at Red River in Grand Forks.
The Hi-Liners lost the first game 18-0 and lost the second 22-0.
Josh Magnuson and Andrew Glaser took the losses for the team in its opening games.
The Hi-Liners enter the season after going winless last year.
