Not too far up Central Avenue from downtown Valley City, a new business is celebrating its grand opening.
Patrick Sadek and Jared Russell are the owners of the Back Yard Bike Shop.
Russell and Sadek began operations Wednesday, July 16, and are planning the grand opening for this week. The bike shop is located in Russell's back yard. Sadek lives nearby.
The boys gathered bike parts and used bikes to start the business.
“It took about a week to gather everything up,” Russell says.
Both boys express a keen interest in bicycles.
According to Russell, the boys initially wanted to open the bike shop during the winter, but decided demand for used bikes and repairs would not be as great.
“I just wrecked a lot of bikes, and had to learn how to fix them,” Sadek says. “My dad gave me my first tool set when I was 4. I wrecked four bikes when I was 4.”
Repair costs include labor and parts. Any repairs at the Back Yard Bike Shop come with a guarantee.
“If we fix it once and they have to come back, we fix it for free,” Sadek says.
The used bikes available at the shop vary in style and price. Most of the models have pegs to allow bikers to carry passengers on the back wheels. They also offer many used bicycle parts for sale, and even have made some chain necklaces out of chains that could no longer be used on bikes.
The shop has one additional employee, Brett Stearns.
Sadek and Russell maintain strict attendance policies.
“If you don't show up for four days, you won't get paid,” Russell says.
The Back Yard Bike Shop is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. During the grand opening, customers who purchase the “grind bike” will receive a free set of rims and tubes. Russell and Sadek invite the public to come to the bike shop at 655 North Central or give them a call. Customers can reach Sadek at (701) 200-6829, and Russell at 840-2865.
Russell, 11, will be a fifth-grader at Washington Elementary School this fall. Sadek, 13, will be a seventh-grader at Valley City Junior High.
