‘Mom, can I go to prom ... in N.D.?’
Thursday, 01 May 2008

It was a special prom for this couple, Chris Olson of Elysburg, Pa., and Kelsey Schwehr of Sanborn. Chris attended school at Barnes County North, North Central Campus, through second grade  until he moved with his family to Pennsylvania. He got together with all his former classmates, who are seniors this year, and attended the prom with them. (Submitted photo)

The high school prom is a big thing for most teenagers, but for  Kelsey Schwehr of Sanborn and Chris Olson of Elysburg, Pa., there was a different twist to it all together.
Kelsey and Chris attended the prom as a couple at Barnes County North at the North Central Campus on April 19, but there is a little history behind it.
Chris, the son of Debi (Cruff) Olson and Craig Olson, had attended school at North Central until he left for Pennsylvania the summer after second grade. Kelsey’s parents are Kathy (Schwehr) Nelson and Jerry Nelson of Sanborn. Through the years, when the Olsons came back to North Dakota, Kelsey and Chris saw each other and visited, and kept up on things. But for most of the North Central graduating class, this was the first time they had seen Chris since second grade.
His former classmates even had him in the senior class picture  at the prom. Many of his old classmates, who hadn’t seen him since he left the summer after second grade, couldn’t get over how tall he is. Cindy Schwehr said he’s probably 6 feet 5 inches tall.
One of his best friends, Josh Quick, from second grade, said, “He’s huge. Quite a change from second grade.”
Some of the teachers, who still remembered him as a second-grader, thought it was fun to see him, too.
It was a prom this couple won’t ever forget ... nor will his former classmates.
