Volunteers are angels
Thursday, 24 April 2008
Letter from Vicki Jackson
Valley City, N.D.
Volunteers are vital to the life and health of our community and we couldn’t function without them! In anticipation of next week’s National Volunteer Week (April 27 – May 3), we want to thank all the volunteers for the many ways they serve. Each day, volunteers are serving in our community to meet the needs of others and to help make our community a better place to live. We appreciate them more than words can say.
Volunteers have been compared to angels on earth. Luciano de Crescenzo said, “We are all like one-winged angels – it is only when we help others that we can fly.”
Those angels who have earned their wings through their volunteer service at Sheyenne Care Center, Mercy Hospital, and Faith in Action are invited to a joint open house celebrating National Volunteer Week on Monday, April 28 at 2 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Valley City.
We’d also like to encourage more people to experience the joy of serving. A local volunteer expressed the benefits of serving in this way, “I believe we’ve all been put on this earth to make a positive difference in the world we live in. The Lord has blessed every one of us with gifts that we can use to benefit others. I volunteer my time because it allows me to use my gifts to make this world a little brighter for those around me.”
If you would like to share your gifts and talents, consider volunteering. There are so many rewarding ways for you to contribute. As Dick Gregory once said, “One of the things I keep learning is that the secret of being happy is doing things for other people.”

Vicki Jackson is director of Faith in Action of Mercy Hospital and Wellness in the Valley.
