Supreme Court justices took over the Hi-Liner Activity Center Monday afternoon to conduct a hearing.
The North Dakota Supreme Court stopped in Valley City to hear an appeal by the City of Devils Lake in a traffic stop case.
Chief Justice Gerald W. VandeWalle explained judicial procedures to the mixed audience of students, staff, and community members. In a closed session, the audience was able to observe the actual arguments in the case. After the hearing concluded, justices were available for a question and answer session.
Justices visited several classes at VCHS earlier in the day, and ate lunch at the school.
According to Kim Knodle, Valley City Senior High principal, a variety of senior high classes were selected during the day to receive visits from the Supreme Court justices. Knodle said all seventh- and eighth- graders were visited by the justices in the theatre.
The idea for the visit was initiated by social studies teacher Scott Wilmes, who acquired information about applying for visitation by the Supreme Court.
