Letter from Ann Wendel Kathryn, N.D. Two years ago, my husband’s life was saved by his basketball buddies when he had a heart attack. Nearly 20 years ago, my mom had a heart attack during her own birthday party. We weren’t able to save her. In a way, my husband and my mom reflect reality. Heart disease is the #1 killer of women, and women’s warning signs can be very different from men’s. Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s drive to spread that information and more. Women in Valley City have a special invitation to learn more about how to take care of their hearts next Monday, April 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the VCHS HAC. Women tend to be very good at taking care of the other people. We watch over our children, we love our families, we care for our friends, but we often forget about taking care of ourselves. I think there is a reason the younger women the Heart Association wants to target are hard to reach -- they don’t have time. So maybe it’s time to put on a red shirt and claim a couple of hours for yourself, for a night out with some fun activities, gifts, door prizes, and stories. I hope lots of local women will pick up tickets and attend the Go Red event. I’m going red for my mom. Who would you like to go red for?
