Be wary of Medicare supplement plans |

Letter from Audrey Cleary Bismarck, N.D. Wake up North Dakotans! Don’t get sucked into the so-called “Medicare Supplement” plans. The Republicans created “Medicare Advantage” to compete with traditional Medicare by providing enormous financial incentives to private insurance companies. This and the Prescription Drug Plan are part of the Republican plan to bankrupt Medicare. Once on a Medicare Advantage Plan, seniors forfeit their traditional Medicare coverage and it may take many months to get back on. Insurance companies will realize enorrmous profits. For example, the Medicare-approved payment for a medical procedure may be $1,000, but under the “Medicare Advantage” plan, the insurance company can be paid up to $1,500 from Medicare funds. This is a waste of taxpayer money and certainly will help to jeopardize the solvency of Medicare. The cuts to Medicare in the President’s budget will do the same. Medicare has provided excellent care to seniors for more than 43 years. Why make these changes to destroy this program that has helped so many Senior Citizens? Read the fine print when approached by these insurance companies!
