By Phil Mueller This is not a legislative report but some of my thoughts about Barnes County North's participation in the recently concluded state boy's class B basketball tournament. Congratulations to Barnes County North! It was a good weekend to be in Bismarck. It was state class B boy's basketball time. The annual classic had a new team this year--the Barnes County North Bison. It has been decades since a member of the newly reorganized district had a participant in the boy's state tournament. I remember it well. I played in it in 1963 which was the last class C basketball tournament. There has never been a class B boy's basketball entrant from Wimbledon-Courtenay, North Central of Barnes, or Spiritwood until this past weekend. It is a very good way to start a newly reorganized district. 2007 will long be remembered as the glory days for the players, the students, the fans, the coaches, and the parents who part of the tournament. The high school experience is and should be about academics but it is much more. Lessons in teamwork, working and cheering to accomplish a common goal, discipline, respect, faith in each other were learned and confirmed this past weekend on a state stage that is the North Dakota Class B boys basketball tournament. The players, the fans, and the coaches represented the Barnes County North community with the pride, the behavior, and the spirit that makes us all feel better about who and what we are. Beau Sizer was selected to the all tournament team, coach Stacy Schaffer was named the coach of the year and the Barnes County North fans were the recipients of the state tournament Spirit Award. It was a good weekend! Barnes County North showed North Dakota that it really isn't as much about winning as it is about how the game is played.
