Ellen Chaffee... VCSU news snippets
Monday, 15 October 2007

By Ellen Chaffee

Here are some notes about some of the many people who make life interesting and exciting at VCSU.
Music, food, and friends will raise funds for music scholarships this Friday night-sirloin and shrimp at 7 p.m., followed by dancing with live local and university bands at the Eagles Club. Reservations required. Call 845-7272 to see if it’s not too late to sign up.
The VCSU Fisheries and Wildlife Conservation Club cleaned up the Sheyenne River. Six members canoed from the Mill Dam to the Little Dam, filling three canoes with trash from the river and its banks. The largest garbage collected was a push lawn mower, roll of chicken wire, and a couple of long rain gutters. Everyone had a fun time while helping to make the city look a little nicer.
Dr. Diana Skroch, chair of the Division of Fine Arts and Department of Music, will present a lecture, "Bolivia-Undiscovered Treasure," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Barnes County Museum, as part of the Historical Society lecture series. Skroch holds degrees in Music, Art, and Spanish. Her continuing study of the Spanish language has led her to travel in Spain and Mexico, and Central and South America. Two years ago, she enrolled in immersion school in Sucre, Bolivia.
Beth Gigante Klingenstein recently gave presentations at three state conferences: Music Teachers Association of California, Minnesota Music Teachers Association, and North Dakota Music Teachers Association. Her presentations dealt with incorporating professional business practices into the independent music studio and creating a unique curriculum for the independent music instruction.
The Valley City State University Athletic Department is fortunate to be in its third year of an agreement with North Dakota State University to provide opportunities for our varsity teams to have assistant coaches and also for those coaches to work towards their Master's degree at NDSU or VCSU.
"Citizens and Enemies and Aliens, Oh My! Or, How Latvia Gave Me an Alien Passport in the Country of My Birth," a paper written by Dr. David Silverman, was accepted for publication by The International Journal on Diversity in Organisations, Communities, and Nations. More than twenty percent of Latvia's people are in a limbo "non-citizen" status fifteen years after a national vote for independence from the Soviet Union. Dr. Silverman presented the paper at the Seventh Annual International Conference on Diversity in Organisations, Communications, and Nations held in Amsterdam last August.
Dan Clark has been hired as director, Office of Instructional Design. Mr. Clark studied engineering at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. He went on to earn his M.S. in Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation from Syracuse University. He has worked as an instructional designer at Syracuse University in New York and at St. Joseph College in Connecticut. Mr. Clark is supporting VCSU's faculty in their commitment to offering more flexible delivery of instruction.
