By Steve Browne Valley City may grow if proposed annexation resolutions pass. On Monday, the City Commission gave notice of the city’s intent to annex land that totals 24,180,220 square feet. The land is distributed throughout seven areas in and around Valley City. The 153 parcels include 93 residential, 47 commercial, 11 agricultural and two city-owned tax-exempt properties, said City Administrator Jon Cameron. The city will put a reading of the proposed annexation in the Times-Record on Thursday, said City Auditor Avis Richter. A 30-day protest period will run from Friday through Dec. 7. At 5 p.m. Dec. 14, the City Commission will hold a public hearing to determine the sufficiency of written protest. If owners of one-fourth or more of the land under consideration protest, the annexation process must stop and go into mediation. According to documents provided by the city, 124 single or joint owners possess land in the proposed annexation areas. Any protests must be filed in writing with the city auditor’s office within the 30-day period, Richter said.
